“Seers—and explorers—these we must be”

Dr. Roger Lipsey – Author, Hammarskjöld: A Life

Dag Hammarskjöld (1905 – 1961), second Secretary-General of the United Nations, was both seer and explorer. A seer in the sense that, on the basis of deep loyalty to Christian mystical and ethical teachings (Meister Eckhart, Thomas à Kempis), he approached himself privately and the world’s strife and promise with penetrating vision. As well, he was an explorer, a peacemaker adept at advancing through rough terrain at the height of the Cold War. “One with your task, whole in your duty of the moment,” he wrote in his journal Markings. Addressing himself—and us all.

SpIRE is delighted to host a lecture with Dr. Roger Lipsey, American author of the acclaimed recent biography of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and of several books about the monk and author Thomas Merton.

The SpIRE lecture was held on Saturday, 20 February 2016, at 11.00 am, in the Theatre, Gonzaga College, Sandford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
