In an interview with Near FM radio on 7 March 2012, Dr Michael O’Sullivan, S.J. talks about St. Archbishop Oscar Romero who was assassinated on 24th March 1980, while saying Mass in his native country, El Salvador. He was assassinated by a lone gunman acting under the direction of a death squad linked with the Government in the country. It was the eve of Holy Week when the Church worldwide commemorates the mystery of its own life and in a small and economically poor country we had heard proclaimed anew: ‘A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends’ (John 15:13). You can also read Fr O’Sullivan’s tributes to St Romero in two articles in Spirituality: “Anniversary Tribute to Archbishop Oscar Romero” (March-April 2010): 103-08, and “Archbishop Oscar Romero” (March-April 2015): 119-23.
